Event Coverage: BMWCC Trillium Go-Karting Champion Series Race #2 - Jan.29 2012 @GPK

Race #2 of  BMW Club of Canada's Go-Karting Championship series took place this past Sunday evening at Grand Prix Kartways. The electric karts were charged, set to speed setting 1 and ready to go as the club made it's way out to GPK in Downsview as a light dusting of snow blanketed the GTA. These events give the club members a chance to feed our driving addiction, while socializing with friends that share a common interest during the winter months.

A quick club meeting held by the club's Vice President and organizer of the series, John Venditti. John also took the time to introduce the new president of the club for 2012, Isi Papadopolous.

Leaning into it trying to get that last 10th of a second for qualifying...
Jon's helmet cam capturing some Go-Pro footage.

Then the event starts off with a qualifying round, everyone is split into groups and qualifying starts. Like qualifying in F1 or Indy, it's not about crossing the finishing line first, it's about setting the fastest lap time you can. Karts are released with gaps to separate the crowd, but more often than not you may run into some traffic. Instead of battling it out you'd probably want to leave some room and try for the good time on the next lap. Once qualifying is over, everyone is ranked by their fastest lap and then split into groups. Points are awarded for being in the fastest group.  With a group of skilled drivers, competition is pretty fierce, times ranging from 22.1s - 22.5s in the fastest group. This pushed 5 of our drivers into the 'Best of The Week' leader board of the top 12 lap times that week. My 22.8 was only good enough for mid pack in the second group.

Devon set the fastest time in qualifying, I'm assuming it wasn't this one handed lap...
Race #1 starts with drivers lined up based on their qualifying times. On green the drivers take off battling for position in the first corner.

John looking for some room...
Matching Helmet, Why? Because Race Kart.

Race #2 drivers or lined up in opposite order (Slowest - Fastest)...

The guys in group #3 were battling it out for 2nd....
While the only lady on the track runs away in 1st.
Randy giving chase...
She's holding them off!
The battle for 2nd..
Don't do it Randy...
Eventually the guys dirty tricks get them past the lone female, she did a great job holding them back until the last few laps. Meanwhile in the fast group...

John & Devon more concerned about watching their backs...
Kurt trying to imagine being in his E36 Track car...

Kam looking pretty relaxed like the Stig on his shirt.
John planning his next move...

...and that's about it. Thank you John for organizing the series. It was a great event and a good chance to socialize and get out of the house. What else do you have to do on a Sunday evening? If anyone is interested in joining, click here for future dates.
